Top Indian Chefs

While a Michelin star is the mark of the best chef, there are also other Chefs who are quite near this goal. With ten and twenty accolades to their credit, these Chefs are India’s best and most sought after. Some you get to see on television and some you get to meet at restaurants and still some you get to read about here and in dailies and periodicals. It is their talent, their perseverance and their desire to excel in their field that sets these chefs apart. 

1.  Chef Atul Kochhar

Atul Kochhar, born in India and based in British as a chef, is a restaurateur and television personality. He regularly makes television appearances on shows such as MasterChef and BBC’s Saturday Kitchen. He was the first Indian chef to get his Michelin star as a chef at Tamarind, London. In 2007 he received his second star for his own restaurant – Benares. He is famed for his modern take on Indian cuisine, using British ingredients.
 
2.  Chef Vikas Khanna

Michelin star chef Vikas Khanna is a restaurateur, cookbook writer, filmmaker and is also the host of Indian TV shows – MasterChef India, seasons 2, 3 and 4, and MasterChef Junior.
He has also worked with chefs such as Gordon Ramsay and Bobby Flay. He started a restaurant, Junoon, in New York in Dec 2010, which went on to win its first Michelin star in October, 2011.
 
3.  Chef Vineet Bhatia

Twice starred Michelin Chef, Vineet Bhatia is one of the most popular Indian Chefs in Britain. His restaurant, Rasoi, which opened in 2004, was awarded a Michelin star in 2006 and then in 2009, Rasoi by Vineet in Geneva also was accorded this recognition. His modern take on traditional dishes has made him popular as one of the best chefs in Indian cuisine. His first cookery book was launched in 2010 and it contains more than 150 of his recipes that have earned him his name.
 
4.  Chef Vikram Khatri

Awarded the ‘Chef of the Year’ award in 2010, Chef Vikram Khatri of Guppy by ai in Delhi is renowned for his Japanese cuisine. Trained under internationally acclaimed chefs at the Japanese restaurant Sakura, Chef Vikram follows the mantra ‘You must know your basics’. 
 
5.  Chef Ritu Dalmia

Chef and co-owner of Delhi’s favourite Italian restaurant – Diva, Ritu Dalmia is a celebrity chef and restaurateur. She is also the host of NDTV Good Times TV shows, ’Italian Khana’ and ‘Travelling Diva’. She has authored three cookbooks as well that include recipes from around the world. One of the few chefs who have had no professional training, her dishes are innovative and gastronomical and that’s what has made her the stellar chef that she is today.
