What started in the year 1810 to celebrate the royal wedding of King Ludwig I and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen, is now one of the largest festivals in the world.
Over the years, it became a tradition to celebrate this festival with local breweries displaying their wares and eateries setting up stalls to sell Munich delicacies, leading to it then becoming the world’s most celebrated beer and funfair festival.
While there are many attractions from fair grounds to music at the festival, beer or “liquid gold” is undoubtedly the main reason for the massive turnout (of course!). Some of the most popular beer tents are Käfer’s Wies’n-Schänke and Schützen-Festzelt among many others.
If there’s one thing that beer drinkers appreciate as much as their favourite type of beer, is the food that goes with it. Think piping hot bratwurst sausages, potato salad and roast duck to go with cold beer.
What good is your favourite drink and amazing food without the right ambience? The vibe at the festival owes a lot to the bands contributing to the music scene. From traditional German oompah to classic American rock and modern hits, the music at the festival is as varied and eclectic as the food and the beer.
