Hummus: A Journey From the Middle East to Hollywood

13 May , 2016

Beans and chickpeas are notorious for not making it to the “favourite foods” list of many. But throw in some olive oil, lemon juice, tahini (sesame paste) with salt, and suddenly, everyone gets ready to jump in, loaded with pita bread or lavash! Yes, I’m talking about hummus – a beautifully smooth dip courtesy Levantine and Egyptian cuisine.

Made from cooked, mashed chickpeas, hummus, is one of the most popular exports of the Middle East to the world, along with Shawarma, Baklava and Cheb Khaled of the famous Didi track (if you don’t know who he is, you’re probably too young!). From being a humble dip in Middle Eastern homes, hummus has graduated to a life of fame and notoriety, finding a cosy spot in restaurants all over the world serving Middle Eastern fare. In fact, in Adam Sandler’s You Don’t Mess with the Zohan (2008), one can go so far as to say that the tub of hummus was a prominent member of the supporting cast!

Don’t believe us? We have proof:

One of the earliest shots in the film has the curly-haired Zohan impressing the ladies on a scenic beach with his stellar hummus-throwing skills.

So strong is his love for hummus, that he literally begins his day with it!

He prefers his chocolate with a dash of extra goodness (okay, maybe more than just a dash).Fine Dine Loe

And it’s not just him who’s crazy about the flavoursome dip.Fine Dine Love

Then there’s his father, who loves it just as much – enough to add a generous dollop to his drink! Like father like son, amirite? Fine Dine Love

In fact, hummus is kind of the hero in the film, with extinguishing a massive fire and the like.

Convinced? Now go grab some hummus and pita!
