Epic Music and Drink Combinations

24 Oct , 2015

Have you ever tried to swirl a glass of wine and sniff for its subtle aromas with the head banging notes of Metallica’s ‘Master of Puppets’ playing in the background? If that entire sentence sounds extremely wrong and makes you cringe, then you’re on the right track! Turns out that music and drinks are a heady combination, where the kind of music you listen to can influence what you drink. So there’s a reason why you reach for that chilled beer instead of a glass of Prosecco while listening to Metallica.

Sans the science, here are some music and drink combinations that pair so well, that we’re tempted to call them ‘epic’ combinations!

Rap / Hip Hop and Vodka: When you see the biggest names in the Rap and Hip Hop world endorsing various vodka brands, you just know this combination is meant to be. This one is a definite party starter. It’s what you reach for when you’re hitting the town with your friends and want to party as hard as you’ve been working.

Of course, holding a drink in hand would be way too cumbersome. You could even skip the salt and lime because from what I gather, folks in Mexico like their native drink served ‘neat’.

Classical Music and Wine: Here’s the thing about wine and classical music – apparently even wine grapes grow better to the sounds of Mozart. Nope, there’s no loony theory here, just the fact that apparently the low-frequency vibrations of the music affects the vines on which these grapes grow. With such a deep connection, is it any wonder that wine would go well with classical music too? The music doesn’t at any point interfere as you appreciate the delicate aromas and flavours of the wine you’re sipping, making it a perfect combination for date nights when you just want to lose yourself in endless conversations.

Rock and Beer: Once a sign of rebellion, today, rock music remains opinionated, but has an air of being laidback. Think summer, barbeques, deep discussions that can get heated, but everything gets settled over a glass of chilled beer.

Jazz and Scotch:  Imagine this- dim lights, mellow ambiance, the tempo of jazz music building up as you sip your first drink and then loosen your tie and take off your cuff links with the second drink. The music too, has now moved on to lighten your mood with hints of R&B. You’d be tempted to think this was a scene from Mad Men with Don Draper sitting at a bar after a day’s work drinking his Scotch ‘neat’, but this could very well be you. With no teeny bopper in sight, this combination is a mature one, but, one that’s perfect to help you unwind after a long day or week at work.
