For the love of food and everything good

A guide to eating like a gourmand in Mumbai

1 Mar , 2015

There is food on one hand and then there is gourmet. Gourmet food is not for the faint hearted or for the frivolous eater. If you’re the kind that wants to down a quick meal and get on with the next thing on the agenda, then you’re most definitely not a gourmet. On the other hand, if you like to savour your food, identify the subtle flavours and spices that went into making it, soak in the atmosphere, chat with the chef and generally make a ritual of the meal, you will definitely want to check out at least one of these restaurants (if you haven’t already). From amazing sushi to mouth watering Biryani, the following Mumbai-based restaurants give you all that and more.

1. Wasabi by Morimoto – The Taj Mahal Palace

Renowned for its sushi, Wasabi by Morimoto is one of India’s leading fine dining restaurants. The Sushi rolls and Black Miso Cod are a must try. And a little Sake with your meal is a welcome addition!

Where – Colaba

Cost for two – 10,000

Famous for – Sushi

2. Peshawari – ITC Maratha

Peshawari is where you go when you want to eat good Indian frontier food. With a quaint old world charm in the decor and courtesy in the service and melt in the mouth kebabs which speak of hours of patient marinating and grilling, Peshawari is a place which lingers on in the memory, like a gentle spice.

Where – ITC Maratha, Andheri East

Cost for two – 5000

Famous for – Kebab place, North Indian, Mughlai

3. Dum Pukht – ITC Maratha

Awadhi style Biryani at its best. The ambience takes you back to the ages of the kings and queens. You will feel like royalty too, as that’s the way the staff treat you. Altogether gives you a reason to go back, time after time.

Where – ITC Maratha, Andheri East

Cost for two – 5000

Famous for – Biryani

4. Ziya – The Oberoi Mumbai

You’d be lucky to get a window seat at this bay-side restaurant. I suggest you reserve a table prior to your visit. The food not only tastes good but is presented beautifully too. The vegetarian food is as brilliant as the non-vegetarian dishes.

Where – The Oberoi, Nariman Point

Cost for two – 4500

Famous for – Sunday Brunches

5. Olive Bar and Kitchen

The Greek decor, good crowd and their courteous staff and prompt service is what has kept Olive top notch from the beginning. The place serves excellent quality continental food. Their salads are mouth watering delicious if you are a salad kind of person.

Where – Khar

Cost for two – 5000

Famous for – Wine Bars, Lebanese, Continental, European
